Opportunities

This week was proof again that anyone who fears a small school has fewer opportunities for its students need not worry.

The Parents and Friends Quiz Night on Sunday was a triumph – twenty tables of fiercely competitive community members vying for a prestigious first place, plus a successful raffle and silent auction to help raise funds for Menora Foundation. The teachers’ table realised that winning a second-year running might result in fewer participants in the future and we were happy to concede this year’s win. I found it a little sad that the 80’s music round was the only one in which I was able to contribute answers, but it was a fabulous night in which the community came together to support our school. Thank you to everybody who took part with such enthusiasm and to the wonderful P&F for all their organisation of the event. Students in both the Primary and High School will benefit from the funds raised, which are enabling us to buy a covered trailer for use on camps and excursions.

To our great delight, many of our Carmel student musicians played and sang to accompany the coffee van at the Primary School gate on Wednesday morning before school. The arrival of the Primary School students dressed in their amazing book week costumes added to the carnival atmosphere and it made for an excellent start to the day.

Excursions were also a popular learning activity this week, as the Year 5 students enjoyed an excursion to the Fremantle Prison and some of our young writers in Year 8 took time away from school to work with authors at the Literature Centre. Two top public speakers from Year 4 represented the School with pride at Wesley College in the Speakers’ Challenge and I was privileged to judge the heats of the Carmel Year 6 students’ speeches on campus on Wednesday evening. We are very much looking forward to our two winners (Abby and Ezra) representing Carmel at Scotch College in September.

Book Week culminated in a fabulous Year 3 assembly on Friday – we loved the singing, dancing and celebration of all things to do with books and reading.
